Generic BSN Program (2+2 Format)

Application Period

Acceptance Cohort Application Period Classes Begin
Fall January 1 - June 1 August

NOTE: It is strongly advised that new applicants apply to the University AT LEAST ONE MONTH PRIOR to submitting a program application to allow the University time to fully evaluate the student’s application/supporting documentation and perform any necessary transfer articulations.

Background

The Generic BSN Program is designed for students desiring a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) and, as such, is an ideal program for high school, transfer, and change-of-major students who want the "classic" college experience. Currently, this program only accepts for the Fall semester of each year.

Program Format

The generic track is offered as a "2+2 program," in which the first 2 years of a student's matriculation is spent completing the Core IMPACTS curriculum and the second 2 years completing professional nursing coursework. Applicants pursuing this program track will enter ASU was a Health and Human Performance major with a Pre-Nursing attribute. During this time, students will complete eight (8) courses that determine their nursing grade point average (NGPA) and, ultimately, their eligibility to apply for the nursing program.

Following program admission, the student's major is formally changed to Nursing. The generic track comprises 5 consecutive semesters beginning in the Fall semester, during which students are exposed to the various fields and specializations within the field, including women's health, obstetrics, pediatrics, geriatrics, and many other areas.

The didactic/lecture component of each nursing course is typically completed on-campus in the L-Building of Albany State University's West Campus. Some courses may be offered in an online or hybridized format, but this is not guaranteed.

Clinical experiences are typically held at Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital and other sites within the Phoebe Health System, as well as other specialty facilities in the surrounding area, as needed. If a student is precluded from a clinical site for any reason (as is a right reserved by the attending facility), the Department of Nursing has no obligation to find an alternate clinical site for the student, and the student will be unable to progress within the nursing program at ASU.

The program culminates with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) and eligibility to sit for the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN). This prepares students with the knowledge and clinical skills to function as a beginning nurse, nurse manager, or leader within various healthcare settings. Graduates are also prepared to enter a graduate nursing program to further their education and advance in their career field, which can also be achieved at Albany State University!

Admission Criteria

Applicants must...

  1. PRIOR to program application, satisfy the following criteria:
    • Be admitted into Albany State University in good standing.
    • Pass the standardized nursing entrance exam at or above the minimum qualifying score within no more than two (2) attempts within 12 months prior to the date of application submission. Our program currently requires a minimum overall score of 70.0% on the Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS).
      • NOTE: Applicants who take the TEAS via a method other than on-site testing at Albany State University's West Campus Testing Center must have their scores OFFICIALLY transferred to ASU via ATI Testing's TEAS Transcript.
  2. AFTER receiving official University acceptance via communication from the Office of Admissions, submit the electronic nursing program application.
    • Applications submitted prior to official University acceptance and/or without available OFFICIAL TEAS scores (either via testing at ASU's West Campus Testing Center or receipt of TEAS Transcript from ATI Testing) will be automatically denied without further review.
  3. Successfully complete and exit all learning support courses.
  4. Complete the entirety of the baccalaureate Core IMPACTS curriculum with a minimum letter grade of "C" in all coursework OTHER THAN NURS 1232: Pre-Nursing Seminar, which requires a "B."
    • NOTE: Applicants with 6 or fewer credit hours of outstanding Core may still be considered for program admission provided no other criteria are outstanding and none of the outstanding courses impact the calculation of the applicant's Nursing GPA (NGPA). If admitted, any outstanding Core must be completed within the first 2 semesters of program enrollment.
  5. Have a minimum NGPA of 2.80 in the following eight (8) Core IMPACTS coursework: English Composition I & II, one (1) 4-hour lab science course (BIOL, CHEM, PHSC, PHYS), Microbiology, Human Anatomy and Physiology I & II, Human Growth and Development, and Pre-Nursing Seminar.
    • Only the HIGHEST grade received within the past 10 years in the above courses will be used to calculate applicants' NGPA. Course that were successfully passed but were either attained over 10 years ago or included in an academic renewal may be considered satisfied but will not impact an applicant's NGPA.
  6. Successfully complete Human Anatomy & Physiology courses that are less than 6 years old at the time of potential program admission.
    • A&P courses older than 6 years of age must be retaken and passed with a letter grade of "C" or higher PRIOR to program application.
  7. Have no more than one (1) required science course failure (i.e., "D," "F," "WF," "U").
    • Students with no more than two (2) science course failures may be considered for admission ONLY if 3 years have passed since the most recently earned science failure.
  8. Have no more than one (1) nursing course failure from prior nursing program enrollment, whether at a 2- or 4-year institution, including ASU and the former Darton State College (i.e., "D," "F," "WF," "U").
    • Students with no more than two (2) nursing course failures may be considered for admission (or readmission) ONLY if 3 years have passed since the most recently earned nursing failure.

Students are subjected to compulsory background checks and drug screenings per clinical agency requirements and may also be required to submit to random tests for illegal use of controlled substances as provided by the law and/or regulations of the contracting agency. Therefore, it is important to conduct personal record checks prior to program application.

If a site refuses to allow a student to attend clinical experiences for any reason, the nursing program is not obligated to find another clinical site, and the student will be unable to complete the nursing program at ASU.

 Curriculum Pattern

Fall University Entry / Fall Program Entry

  1. Items highlighted in yellow will be factored in the calculation of students' Nursing GPA (NGPA)
  2. Regarding the first in-program semester, in order to maintain full-time student status, students must take a minimum of 12 credit hours each non-summer semester. This credit hour load may also affect other areas, such as financial aid disbursement and campus housing. Please speak with your faculty advisor regarding electives relevant to the major that may be taken to supplement this load.
