GARRETT JONES, BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN COMPUTER SCIENCE

FUTURE PLANS: CONTINUED EDUCATION IN INFORMATION ASSURANCE

Garrett Jones, Albany native, will graduate on December 11 with a Bachelor’s in Computer Science. He is an officer with the Albany State University Police Department.

What are your post-graduation plans?
I plan to do some job shadowing as well as expand my education by obtaining my Master’s degree. There are also some certifications that I’d like to obtain.

What motivated you to learn more about your field?
It has always been a desire of mine. I’ve always been drawn to computer/electronic technology.

What do you love most about your chosen profession?
I love the fact that my profession could allow me to work from home and spend more time with my family. I would love to be a part of a global industry that would help the world advance conveniently in everyday life.

Why did you choose ASU?
I chose ASU because it runs within my family and it’s close to home. I have several family members who have obtained degrees from this amazing HBCU.

Who has made the biggest impact on you and who do you consider to be a role model at ASU?
Dr. Robert Owor has helped and looked out for me so much since I’ve been here. Dr. Seyed Roosta’s passion is something that I admire. Mr. Lekeon Little is also someone who everyone in the Computer Science program loves. He’s done so well at helping mold the students and keeping them intrigued.

What are you passionate about outside of your education?
I’m very passionate about my job. It’s unique and one of a kind to say the least but, I get a chance to make a positive impact on a lot of people.

What advice would you give to other ASU students?
Take advantage of the time you have now. Never doubt yourself and make any efforts you can to succeed. We are all gifted in some way, meaning the natural abilities you were blessed with won’t allow you to fail.

What would you say to a High School student about choosing ASU to further their education?
Make the most of your years at ASU. Make sure you understand the importance of time management and a good balance of work and play. Lastly, don’t misrepresent your family by making avoidable and life-changing mistakes.
